BGM is making some additions to how we approach student achievement. First, we are on a mission to provide the necessary skills for understanding the ISTEP math assessment. One of the most important things we can do is give exposure to certain types of problems that exist on the assessment and allow students to practice those problems. So, here is what that is going to look like for our BGM Community:
- Every Monday, beginning November 27- Grade level ISTEP Math problem of the week is posted to the BGM website.
- Students work on completing the ISTEP Math problem Monday-Thursday on their own.
- Every Thursday during homeroom each teacher will show their grade-level specific video on how to solve the problem correctly along with problem solving tips, and an explanation of the ISTEP scoring process. *These are important for students to know in order to receive as many points as they can for solving the problem correctly. In order to receive full credit for a problem, the ISTEP process requires students to answer in specific ways. (a simple correct answer will only receive up to ½ credit)
Second, we have seen a drastic increase in student missing, late, and zero assignments. BGM began a lunch homework table where students that were missing assignments would work on those assignments while they ate their lunch in a designated room rather than in the cafeteria. However, students had to get their lunch, get down to the designated room, get what they needed to accomplish their assignment(s) out, eat their lunch, then work. As you can imagine, not much was being accomplished. We have not seen an improvement in students and the missing assignments are really piling up as we head towards the end of the semesters.
We have decided to start a mandatory after school homework accountability program,. Students with 5 or more missing assignments in one class will be assigned to After School Homework Table (AHT). We will host AHT Mondays and Wednesday from 2:30-3:30 right after school. Any student with 5 or more missing assignments will be assigned to every AHT until they have less than 5 missing assignments in each class. Students should report directly to AHT after school and bring all school materials needed to finish their assignments. Parents or Guardians will be responsible for picking up their student at 3:30. We are sharing this with you now in an effort to get most, if not all, missing assignments turned in before Monday, November 27, 2017. We will begin AHT on Wednesday, November 29, 2017.
Thank you for your continued support as we work with our students to build their capacity for solving these problems.
